“MANTAN Everyday" - CHAPTER 7"

MANTANeveryday_1

Tsuzuru: …….It’s closed?
Tasuku: As in it’s already out of business? …..I never heard about this.
Misumi: And we came all this way too… (pout).....
Chikage: Were the prospects not that high?
Tsuzuru: No, I don’t think it ever went that bad…
Tasuku: We even had weekends and membership point bonus days, so it wasn’t like we’d run out of customers. Plus, I’m pretty sure we had lots of regulars back then.
Tsuzuru: Right. One of the regulars had a boy who loved to do impersonation bits while they had their car checked.
Omi: That sounds adorable.
Tsuzuru: There was also an old lady who would offer us candies and juice whenever she came by. Sometimes she’d even bring fruits.
Tasuku: I remember her. And if I recall, there was also an elderly couple that would come by every month on a motorbike together.
Juza: …..They sound cool.
Tsumugi: This gas station must hold a ton of memories for you guys.
Tsuzuru: It does, yeah…. It feels like all of the memories are slowly coming back to me just by being here and talking about it with Takato-san.
Tasuku: Same here.
…..Looking back on it now though, I think all of our equipment was pretty old even back then.
Tsuzuru: Oh yeah, I think this place goes way far back, right?
Tasuku: I’m not completely sure myself but… From what I can see just from looking around, there’s not a single trace of newer pieces of equipment at all.
Chikage: These days people would do DIY repairs themselves, and I assume that installing new equipment would cost quite a lot.
Tasuku: I can only imagine that the possible reason this place is going out of business is because of all those factors accumulating over time… It really is unfortunate, but it is what it is.
Omi: Is that so…
Tasuku: …There’s no use lingering here for too long. We should get going.
Misumi: Public bath time~!
Tsuzuru: …….
Tasuku: Minagi?
Tsuzuru: Ah, I’m coming. Sorry!

Tsuzuru: I’m home~

MANTANeveryday_2
Masumi: Welcome home. It’s almost time for dinner. Citron came by just now to let us know.
Tsuzuru: I see. I’m gonna work on something a little bit, you can go ahead, Masumi.
Masumi: …Didn’t you already finish the script you were working on?
Tsuzuru: Well… I did finish it, but uhm. This is just like… a reserve? A few additions? Something like that.
Masumi: Hmmm….

Juza: …..
Tsuzuru: Oh, hey there Juza.
Juza: Tsuzuru-san. Yo.
Tsuzuru: Were you reading “Sunny Workers”?
Juza: Yeah. Ever since you let me follow along during your interviews, I think I now have a better idea of the workplace choices I could narrow down.
Tsuzuru: Glad to hear that then.
Juza: But…. Even after shortening the list, it’s still tough to pick just one.
Tsuzuru: I see. Well, there’s no real limit to how many you can take, so you can maybe try out a little bit of each one and see which will be best?
Juza: I guess that’s an option. But I think it’d be in bad faith to just take the jobs with such half-hearted motives…
Tsuzuru: You really are serious ‘till the end, aren’t you, Juza…
Juza: By the way, didn’t you already finish the script for the commercial? If it’s fine with you, can you let me read it?
Tsuzuru: Well, I won’t be getting any feedback until our next briefing, so it’s nothing final yet. If you’re alright with that, then sure.
My laptop’s battery… Yeah, it’s still fine. Here, it’s in this folder to the right.
Juza: Thanks.
(....? There are four files in this folder. I’m pretty sure he mentioned that he was only commissioned to make enough for three commercial videos.)
This fourth one seems to be titled differently from the others— “GasStation-TEST” . Is this also for the commercial?
Tsuzuru: Ahh… So remember when we went to the old gas station I used to work at? Visiting that place gave me some inspiration, so I wrote that as some sort of addition to the rest.
I already sent over the ones needed for the three video projects anyway, so for this one, it’s somewhat of a revised plot. Though I don’t really have any plans to do anything with it right now.
Juza: …Is it fine for me to read it?
Tsuzuru: I mean. I don’t really mind——

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —

Juza: …Tsuzuru-san. I think you should definitely show this script to the employer.
Tsuzuru: Eh….?
Juza: I can’t really express it well in words, but. As I was reading this, it felt like becoming a gas station worker would…
Actually, no. More than that, it made me feel like wanting to try out any kind of job possible.
Tsuzuru: You really think so? I never really expected such a reaction to come out from something like this.
How do I say this… The main guy in this script is someone who does nothing but get anxious over everything. If you were told you’d get support from such a guy, wouldn’t it make you feel pessimistic instead?
Juza: Maybe so… But I don’t think giving support means you only have to use positive words.

Tsuzuru: ——
Juza: My experience is lacking in comparison, so I might not completely get it… But whether for a part-timer or for a full-timer, I wouldn’t think doing any job is an all-rainbow experience.
Of course, there are lots of people who would only want to experience the best kind of work, but there are still people like me who find the good in even the worst parts of the experience.
The reasons people take part-times or apply for jobs… They all differ from person to person.
It’s not because it’s full of upsides, but it’s the resolution to work despite knowing there will be downsides. I think all of that comes together in the end.
Tsuzuru: ….
Juza: …All of that is just my opinion though. Sorry for blabbin’.
Tsuzuru: It’s alright, I should be thanking you— I also feel somewhat relieved, hearing all that.
I was stumped about what I could write after the line break, but I guess I’m gonna try finishing this whole thing now.
